Patient Care Technician Program
The PCT Program at AHCI prepares a graduate to work as an entry-level Patient Care Technician in a clinic, hospital, wound care center, or long-term care facility. Graduates will be nursing assistants who are able to perform a range of advanced patient care procedures. Patient Care Technicians are trained to assist in medical examinations. They can perform electrocardiograms, phlebotomy and other basic laboratory procedures as well as more complex patient care skills. This program is taught with a combination of lecture, practical exercises in the medical laboratory.
This course teaches advanced patient care skills which are required of many unlicensed assistive personnel practicing under the supervision of licensed medical professionals. This course is designed for the Patient Care Technician. The importance of reporting information and observations to the licensed supervisor is emphasized throughout this course. Topics include: healthcare delivery, observation-documentation-reporting, infection control, surgical asepsis, wound care, intravenous therapy, elimination procedures, enteral nutrition, specimen collection, special needs, perioperative care, advanced respiratory procedures, endotracheal tube and tracheostomy care, and emergency procedures. This program is taught with a combination of lecture, practical exercises in the medical laboratory and with real-world experience during the externship portion of training conducted off-campus at medical facilities.
Phlebotomy Technician Program
A Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) draws blood from patients or donors in hospitals, blood banks, or similar facilities for analysis or other medical purposes. However, Phlebotomy is more than just taking blood. Our Phlebotomy training course, in addition to teaching collection techniques, prepares the student to handle a full range of issues and contingencies that this field demands. This course provides the student with the latest information on safety, instrumentation, laboratory information systems, legal issues, and diagnostic tests.
EKG Technician Program
A Certified EKG Technician (CET) produces recordings or electromotive variations in a patient’s heart muscle, using an electrocardiograph machine, to provide data for the diagnosis of heart ailments. This course introduces the student to the fundamentals of anatomy and physiology of the cardiovascular system and the role of the electrocardiograph in patient assessment. This course is an introduction to EKG monitoring and rhythm interpretation. The student will learn to correctly apply the monitor leads and obtain monitor strips, as well as interpret the strip for rate and rhythm.
